Prior Approval Applications, West London

Larger single-storey rear extensions and certain changes of use don't need full planning permission, but do need a Prior Approval notification — a faster route where the council checks specific, defined impacts rather than running a full assessment.

How the process works

We submit your proposal along with a neighbour consultation letter. The council notifies adjoining owners, who have a set period to object. If no valid objection is raised (or one is resolved), approval follows automatically once the statutory period passes — usually faster than full planning permission.

Where prior approval applies

Common uses include larger single-storey rear extensions beyond standard permitted development limits, and some changes of use. Eligibility depends on your property, garden size and whether neighbours object — we check this before advising on the route.
